Plumbing horror stories are legendary. The things pulled out of pipes and clogged toilets (everything from dead wildlife to dentures) are enough to fill some of us with dread. Accidents happen. Things get flushed or fall down the drain. Pipes burst in sub-zero temperatures, appliances and toilets leak. All of these plumbing emergencies, if not nipped in the bud, can lead to a plumbing disaster, destroy property and (at the very least) hugely inconvenience homeowners.

There are a number of actions you can take in an emergency while waiting for the while waiting for the plumber to arrive that will reduce damage to your home and property. Prevent problems by spotting potential issues before you have a flood on your hands.

Plumbing Emergency “To Do” List

If a problem arises and water is flowing throughout a room or basement area, follow these steps:

Turn off the water – Even before an event when you have to shut off the water (due to a leak or other plumbing emergency), learn where the water supply valve is located in your house. When you discover water coming out of any location, shut off the valve. If the water is coming from an isolated area (like a sink or toilet), you often can shut off the water right at the source.

Turn on all the faucets inside and outside your house – This will help drain the system and divert water from the leak.

Move all electronics and other valuables – Computers, televisions, phones, and appliances (as well as rugs, furniture, and art) away from the water source.

Shut off your water heater – When the valve controlling the water flow is off, pressure and hot water will begin to rise in your hot water heater. To prevent this important appliance from bursting, turn it off immediately after the main water is shut off.

Stop the leak until the pros arrive – Using tape, buckets, rags, or whatever you can find, stop the leak once you find it. This will prevent further damage to property, drywall, flooring, and moulding while you wait for your plumber to arrive.

Call the plumber! A plumbing professional can assess and repair the problem with the right tools and expert knowledge.

Preventing Problems

As the saying goes, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” Stopping plumbing emergencies before they start is the ultimate goal. Save time, money, and aggravation with a few simple steps.

Clean your drains regularly.

Drains take a lot of abuse, especially in the kitchen. Bits of food and other debris get washed down pipes. Over time, the drains clog. A sink that refuses to drain can become a huge headache and will eventually require a plumber to clear it for you.

Regular drain cleaning can help. Store-bought drain cleaners can do serious damage to your pipes. Instead, try pouring boiling water down the drains from time to time to help clear buildup. Using a mixture of hot water, vinegar, and baking soda is occasionally an effective drain cleaner.

Use drain screens in your kitchen and bathroom to keep food, soap scum, and hair from entering the pipes.

Never pour grease down your kitchen sink, or in the toilet.

If you own a garbage disposal, use it gradually rather than dumping a huge amount of waste in at once. Be careful how you use your garbage disposal and maintain it properly. This will reduce the risk of a plumbing emergency.

Know where your valves are.

In case a water problem does occur, know where all your water valves are located. Do a house inspection and ensure that valves are in good working order.

Turn them off and on a few times to make sure they move well and can be depended on in an emergency.

Look for corrosion around the valves and have a plumber replace them to avoid leaks from coming from the valves themselves.

Don’t stress your pipes.

As pipes age they become weaker. This can lead to leaks and flooding.

Water softeners can take pressure off aging pipes. Water softeners reduce the minerals and chemicals in hard water and prevent them from building up on the inside of your pipes, leading to extra pressure.

Water softeners have several other non-pipe related benefits as well, such as keeping spots off your dishes, and making showering more pleasant on the skin.

By simply conserving and using less water, you can help reduce daily pressure on your pipes.

Regular Maintenance.

One of the best ways to prevent water emergencies from occurring is to have regularly scheduled maintenance of all your plumbing-related equipment.

Have the plumber check your hot-water tank, toilet and sink shut off valves. Every few years have the water lines snaked to prevent clogging before it happens.

Early Warning Signs

Sometimes, your pipes are trying to tell you something. Gurgles, bangs, pops, knocks, and whistles are some of the noises you might hear. Listen for some of these sounds that might alert you to a problem before it actually happens.

Gurgling drains – These can mean several things.

Clogged pipe

Air in the pipes

Drain venting problem

An issue with the sewer line

All of the above issues require the expertise of a plumber for repair.

Banging pipes – Excess banging in your pipes could indicate an obstruction. Again, call your plumber or you’ll have a bigger issue than banging pipes on your hands.

Knocking or popping in your water heater – Sounds coming from the water heater is often an indication of sediment buildup. If your water heater isn’t properly cleaned, limescale and other deposits build up. This sediment buildup results in less efficiency, and noises. Having your hot water heater serviced and cleaned regularly will prevent sediment from building up.

Whistling shower head – Whistling noises from this area may be caused by a blockage. Remove the showerhead and clean it to remove any deposits or buildup. If it’s still making noise after you’ve done this, it may be time for a new shower head.

We hope these tips will help you prevent unexpected plumbing surprises this coming season! Remember to regularly maintain your system and get the help of a professional plumbing team when the job is beyond your skill level. Sometimes homeowners make a problem worse by thinking they can fix it themselves.

It’s Halloween night, and you’re already pretty spooked by the atmosphere, the decorations, and the parade of ghosts, goblins, and witches that have been knocking on your door. The pipes creak and you ask yourself if it’s all just your imagination, or if something more sinister may be lurking. Truthfully, it’s not ghosts and demons that are your worst nightmare on Halloween. Plumbing disasters in the home seem to start appearing when temperatures drop, so it’s important to know the symptoms of plumbing problems and how to prevent them from happening.

Here are some Halloween plumbing tips to help keep your holiday free from floods and other mishaps.

1. Keep pumpkin pulp, seeds, and candy wrappers out of your kitchen drain and/or garbage disposal or you’ll clog the pipe (and cause the mechanism to malfunction). The same rule is true of all sinks and toilets in the house. Do not try to flush candy wrappers or uneaten chocolate down the toilet or put food down the sink. You’ll end up plugging up the pipes and causing a flood. The resulting damage and expense will be your real horror show this Halloween.

The pumpkin insides that remain after you finish your carving belong in the organic garbage bin, or even better, in your compost. If there are any useful pieces of pumpkin left, cut them up, place them on a tray, drizzle some oil over them, and cook them in the oven for a tasty treat. If you have enough you can even bake a sweet pumpkin pie for dessert. You should also hang onto the leftover pumpkin seeds, wash them off, and roast them in the oven. They make a delicious post-Halloween snack.

Don’t drink the water!

2. Let’s say it’s Halloween night and you go to the kitchen sink to get a glass of water. Instead of the fresh, clear water you are expecting, jet black water comes pouring out of the tap. Before you decide that your house is the new site of Amityville Horror, you should know that black water indicates some kind of long term buildup or corrosion somewhere along the pipes. The culprit is most likely the water heater, if you have one. Give your local plumber a call and they’ll look for the source of the buildup and fix the problem.

3. What if you go to turn on the tap and you suddenly have no water or extremely low water pressure? Are you being haunted by the ghost of unpaid water bills, or is there another explanation? Think for a minute. If you handed out subpar treats, the neighbourhood kids may have decided to turn off your main water supply from outside as a little mischievous payback. “Trick or treat!”

Credit: Coolest Parties

4. Halloween makeup may seem innocent enough, but it can make a big mess of your drain and your pipes. Many lipsticks, eyeliners, greasepaint, (and even expensive foundations) are full of thick oils which can line the pipes and slow them down considerably. This kind of residue is very difficult to remove, and will only end up costing you money in future plumbing fixes. Show your kids how to remove their holiday makeup carefully with a gentle cleaning solution applied to a cotton ball, washcloth or wipe, and then dispose of it in the garbage can. Do not throw wipes in the toilet, even if the product instructions state explicitly that you can safely do so. Unused makeup that you don’t want also belongs in the trash, not in the toilet or down the drain.

Things that “go bump in the night” — your pipes!

5. If you’ve lately been lying awake listening to the pipes creaking in the night, don’t fear poltergeists or other extra-dimensional paranormal beings. Chances are your pipes are becoming loose, or the water pressure is too high. Creaking sounds can also be caused by hot water moving through pipes and making them expand, followed by cold water which leads the pipes to contract. Insulating the pipes can solve this problem and stop the frightening sounds, if that is the source of the creaking. All of these issues can lead to much bigger problems, so make sure you call a plumber as soon as possible to take care of it right away.

Drip…drip…drip…

6. The sound of a dripping faucet in the middle of the night can be frightening and ominous. Make no mistake about it, the real horror show begins when you get your next water bill and process how much water is being wasted by all of these accumulated drops. The expense really does add up over time. Research carried out by National Geographic uncovered the fact that approximately 14% of an average family’s water bill is specifically due to leaky taps. You can secure that faucet yourself by tightening the setscrew, which can be found under the cap. If you’re unsure how to fix the tap on your own, call your local plumber and get the problem fixed so you can start saving!

7. It’s All Hallows‘ Eve and you’re hanging out at home all by yourself. You think you catch the sound of some very stealthy footsteps coming from the attic, and you start to get a little nervous. Is someone up there? You’re not really sure. You stop and listen, frozen, and then suddenly you hear the unmistakable sound of the floor creaking high above your head. You call out into the empty house, “Is somebody there?” There’s another creaking sound. You take out our card and pick up the phone…should you call a plumber?

No, you should call a pest control professional! You probably have raccoons or squirrels in the attic!

Sometimes plumbing isn’t the problem

Before the start of the rainy season, avoid problems caused by extreme weather. If you live in an area susceptible to heavy downpours, your home or property may be vulnerable. The network of plumbing and sewage pipes is hidden behind walls and underground; it is often taken for granted and left unattended. To make sure your plumbing system operates smoothly, start preparing your plumbing system before inclement conditions arrive.

Many parts of Ontario (including Burlington, Mississauga, and Oakville) see up to 29% precipitation in late September and early October (with an average of 14 rainy days each month) and up to 3.5 inches of rainfall on a given day.

Protect the stability of your property and the well-being and safety of your family and employees. Read on to learn what can happen in flood conditions, and take proactive steps to ensure your plumbing system is working properly.

Problems you may encounter during the rainy season:

Shifting of Underground Pipes

Heavy downpours weaken and soften the earth, turning it into mud. More than just a messy inconvenience, mud can lead to pipe damage. When soil beneath the surface softens, it loosens its hold on underground piping systems, giving the pipes room to move and shift. This shifting can cause pipes to get bent out of shape, resulting in unwanted cracks and leaks.

Pressure Buildup

When the ground absorbs excessive amounts of rain, there is an increase in the weight of the soil. Pressure builds in pipes, raising the risk of damage. Particularly older and more worn out piping (or ones that have been previously damaged) are most vulnerable. Though newer plumbing systems are built to be more durable, other factors (whether natural or man-made) can contribute to wear.

Backups

Backups can result from the combination of increased pressure and shifting of pipes that creates cracks in the underground piping system. These cracks allow soil, pebbles, and other debris to enter pipes, leading to clogs and blockages, causing the water to back up into your home or commercial building.

Water that seeps into your basement or low-lying areas can lead to:

Backdrafting – Backdrafting is the result of negative air pressure (caused by fireplaces and ventilation systems) drawing in gases and other harmful byproducts through the plumbing system and into a building. Though these sewage byproducts can normally be found a safe distance from a building, heavy rain and piping blockages can push them back through the pipes. This event can spread foul odours throughout the inside of a building and be hazardous to people inside.

Flooding – Heavy rains, combined with backed up plumbing systems, can cause water to accumulate above the foundation of a building, resulting in flooding in the basement or lower levels. The smallest cracks in a basement foundation can allow water to enter the basement, leading to serious property damage and the need for repairs.

Growth of Mould – Mould grows in damp and dark areas. Water seeping into a building creates an environment that will allow it to thrive. If left unchecked, mould can damage stored items (e.g. paper, cardboard, fabric) and furniture or upholstery kept in these areas. Mould can also cause health problems (e.g. eye irritation, skin irritation, coughing, wheezing, and severe allergic reactions) among those who are especially sensitive to it.

Compromised Foundation – A significant amount of water in the basement, underground storage area, or around the building can compromise the foundation. This makes the building unsafe and in need of major repairs.

Prevention is key to keeping problems at bay

Having the proper preventive measures in place can help property owners avoid weather-induced plumbing issues. Avoid the trouble of having to fix these problems; be proactive and circumvent the resulting repairs and replacements.

Remove debris from the roof and gutters

Heavy rainfall can wash away the debris (such as leaves and twigs) that have accumulated on your roof and in your gutters, sending them into your pipes and sewers. This can contribute to clogging and backups.

To prepare for any sudden downpour, keep your roof and gutters clean at all times of the year rather than waiting for all your trees to shed their leaves during autumn. This is particularly important if your building is in an area susceptible to heavy rains during the season.

Install a backwater check valve

A backwater check valve (i.e. a sewer backflow valve) is a device used to ensure that water and sewage flow in only one direction (away from your property). This device prevents water flow from travelling indoors through municipal sewer lines. If your residence or place of business is located in an area prone to heavy rains or flooding and is connected to the municipality’s sewer system, have a backwater valve installed and maintained twice every year.

Install sewer traps

Sewer traps are plumbing devices designed to prevent clogs and blockages from forcing sewage water and noxious gases into a building. Sewer traps come in many shapes (S, Q, U, and J); they allow water to be trapped and create a reservoir at the bottom, creating a barrier that protects the building from any backdraft of harmful sewage gases.

Tighten trap plugs

If you already have sewer traps installed, tighten the trap plugs before the onset of rainfall. If the trap plugs are old or worn, have them replaced with new ones to make sure your sewer traps are fully functional. If you don’t know how to correctly tighten those plugs, you may cause damage. Call a professional plumber for help.

Keep your plumbing well-maintained

Property owners need to stay on top of plumbing maintenance to avoid damage brought by heavy downpours. Regular inspections enable you to discover cracks or wear in pipes and other plumbing parts, and make arrangements for necessary repairs or replacements. Plumbing maintenance allows you to save money
in the long run.

Seek the help of licensed plumbers

To avoid losing valuable possessions, enduring property damage, or having to pay for replacements or repairs, hire a professional plumber to inspect the condition of your plumbing. Preventative measures can help you avoid a flood (or broken pipes when sub-zero temperatures hit).

Heavy rains and storms can cause problems for your home or business, risking both the integrity of your property and the health of residents or employees. Keep your investments safe by preparing your pipes to withstand the onslaught of heavy downpours this fall season.

It may not seem like a leaky faucet can cause much damage, but if not repaired immediately, your home can suffer significant damage. Here are some of the issues that you may expect from a leaky faucet.

Water Waste – A steady drip from a faucet can eventually become problematic. A faucet that drips 4000 drips a day equals to approximately one litre of water. Rather than be put to practical use (e.g. washing or drinking), water is lost and is difficult to reuse later. A leaky faucet can drip over 3000 litres of water per year. In homes where there is more than one leaking faucet, the amount doubles. This can increase water cost exponentially, resulting in higher utility bills.

Rust – Leaky faucets also affect the metal they touch, creating rust. Inside pipes and faucets, rust can build up and clog the pipes. If left alone, rust can weaken the pipes further, causing more leaks as rust continues to build. Eventually, the pipes can burst, causing extensive water damage and costly repairs.

Rot – Water can also affect the surrounding surfaces, especially wood. Nearby wooden flooring, walls, or cabinets can warp due to water damage as a result of dripping or leaking. Not only is this aesthetically unappealing, but the damage can also compromise the walls, floors, and cabinets. Eventually, they may not be able to support the weight of other objects.

Mould – Damp conditions can also contribute to mould growth inside the house. Mould patches are unpleasant, but the greatest danger is to the residents’ health. Mould and mildew can contribute to respiratory problems (e.g. sore throat, sneezing, and asthma). Be alert for any musty smells or staining around a leaky faucet.

Lower property values – Visible water damage is also problematic for your home’s value. Persistent water damage can lower your home’s market value, making it harder to sell your house in the future. Damage can persist even after the issues are solved.

Leaky faucets can cause a significant amount of damage to any home. Always stay vigiilant for any leaks around the house to avoid water damage and unexpected costs. Eco-friendly Homeowners should take note of these dangers to help save water.

Saving water is important for many reasons (e.g. helping the environment and reducing your utility costs). Use these easy tricks to regulate your water consumption and ensure better water management in your home.

Fix leaks – Small leaks can become significant over time, sometimes equaling thousands of litres of water in a month. This can also cause your utility bills to suddenly increase. Search your house for any possible leaks and have them fixed immediately. Common offenders are toilets, faucets, and showerheads.

Take shorter showers – Avoid taking long showers and baths to reduce the amount of water used. Recent research also claims that it’s actually better for the body and skin to not shower every day. Short showers are also more efficient for everyday purposes.

Avoid leaving water running – Every drop of water counts. Refrain from leaving the water running unnecessarily for your tasks (e.g. washing dishes, bathing, brushing teeth, or shaving). Turn on the tap only when you need to rinse or wet something, rather than leaving it on for an extended period of time.

Store cold water in the fridge – For a more efficient way to store cold water, keep it in the fridge. Rather than using tap water (and waiting for it to get cold) every time you drink, fill pitchers and reusable bottles; refrigerate them for later use.

Run full dish and laundry loads – Run only full loads of dishes and laundry in the dishwasher and washing machine. Filling the machines to their maximum capacity reduces usage and conserves water. These appliances are generally used throughout the week, so using them more efficiently can significantly reduce the amount of water wasted.

Recycle water – Reuse water that would otherwise be thrown away (e.g. leftover drinking water, fallen ice cubes, or water from washing vegetables). Reuse the water for other tasks, including watering plants or cooking. You can also use a rain barrel to capture rainwater for the same purposes. Consider putting a large bucket in your shower, to catch excess droplets. The savings add up!

Replace old equipment – Old and worn parts tend to lose efficiency as they age. Make sure that they are replaced to avoid further water waste. Newer models of faucets, toilets, and aerators can also improve water conservation without compromising performance.

These tips not only help you save on your water bill, you’ll better manage water usage in your home.

Minor plumbing issues may seem simple to fix, but when the problem is recurring or more complicated, it’s best to rely on a professional plumbing service. Here are some of the biggest reasons why you should contact a professional for your plumbing needs.

Professional Plumbers are Highly Trained
Professional plumbers undergo a training and licensing process. Hiring a professional plumber means that this person has received extensive training and is equipped to deal with whatever issues you are experiencing.

They can Determine the Root of a Problem
Sometimes, a number of issues can yield similar results, but will ultimately require different solutions. A professional plumber can assess any damage and identify the root issue, resulting in a more thorough resolution. Someone with an untrained eye might mistake one issue for another, which can create further complications.

They have Advanced Tools
While you may have basic plumbing tools at home, there are several plumbing issues that require stronger, more professional tools. Hiring a plumber who has the proper tools at their disposal will ensure that all plumbing issues are handled efficiently. This will result in repairs being done with minimal difficulty or inaccuracy.

Long-term Results
Once an expert plumber detects the root of a problem, they can subsequently determine the best course of action. Those without experience in plumbing may only be able to offer a temporary solution. A professional is more like to offer long-term solutions that avoid the possibility of any recoccurance.

They can Detect Other Plumbing Issues
Experienced plumbers can detect issues that may cause future complications. This way, you can anticipate potential problems and either prevent them, or prepare for them in the future.

Personal Safety
The assistance of an expert plumber will prevent you from having to expose yourself to any potential risks associated with DIY work. Fixing defective plumbing fixtures by yourself can lead to electric shock, injuries from tools, and other complications. Hiring a professional plumber who is trained in proper safety protocol can save you from any potential hazards.

They Understand Plumbing Codes
Professional plumbers have an in-depth understanding of the federal and provincial plumbing codes in Canada. Any and all repairs performed in your home must comply with the federal and provincial by-laws before they are executed.

Working on fixtures can cause further damage to your plumbing system if you are not professionally trained. When experiencing plumbing emergencies, call a professional to have them deal with the issue immediately.

If you are in need of a licensed plumber in Oakville, Burlington, or Mississauga, call Abbey Plumbing and Mechanical at (905) 822-0521. We offer services for all of your emergency plumbing needs, including repairs, unclogging, and restoration.

The post Why Plumbing Emergencies Require a Professional first appeared on Abbey Plumbing & Mechanical.

All major plumbing problems should be left in the hands of licensed technicians. However, small in-home fixes can be accomplished if you build some knowledge about basic components of the system. Wade through minor plumbing mishaps until a reliable plumber can fix your pipes.

Here are some basic plumbing facts for homeowners:

PVC and CPVC pipes serve different purposes

A PVC (acronym for polyvinyl chloride) pipe is commonly used for drainage and plumbing and is used as a replacement for metal piping. It is a thermoplastic material molded into different shapes to create fittings, pipes, valves, cold water systems, vent systems, and drainage systems.

CPVC (chlorinated polyvinyl chloride) pipes are more resistant and are commonly used for commercial and industrial applications. They can withstand a wider range of temperatures which is why they are mainly used for hot water applications. CPVC pipes are generally more expensive.

Shut-off valves are useful

Shut-off valves allow you to shut off the water in one particular area and not the entire house. Adding shut-off valves can be useful if you are working in the kitchen, bathroom, or elsewhere.

A leaky toilet makes a water bill balloon

A surging water bill is often due to a leaky toilet or a constantly running toilet. Generally, majority of the water expenses are attributed to the frequent use of water in the bathrooms. A leaky toilet might be caused by a damaged flapper (the rubber part at the back of the toilet). Regularly inspect your bathroom to detect similar issues and fix them right away.

Vent pipes are required for all toilets

Vent pipes are necessary parts for all toilets and should be installed along the exterior of your home. Each toilet needs one vent pipe except when it is installed close to another toilet unit. In this case, you can connect the two toilets to the same vent pipe.

PVC and CPVC pipes are measured differently

Credits: formufit.com

PVC pipes are measured by their inside diameter. CPVC pipes are measured on the outside. If you have a pipe that needs replacing, take a small piece of it to the hardware store and ask their advice.

When in doubt about a plumbing concern, it’s always best to contact a licensed plumber. However, a little know-how might help you stave off water damage until the pros arrive.

A homeowner can encounter common plumbing issues on a daily basis. Complicated problems warrant the assistance of an expert plumber, while other simpler issues like clogged sinks, clogged toilets, or leaky pipes can be remedied at home without the immediate assistance of a plumber.

Before jumping on any plumbing project, it’s important to make sure that you have all the necessary plumbing tools on hand. Here are some essential plumbing tools to have ready in case of emergency:

Plunger

Plungers are one of the most basic tools for clogged toilets and drains. There are two types: cup plungers, which are used to clean out drain clogs in tubs, sinks, or any other flat surface, and flange plungers, which are used for clogged toilets. Flange plungers have a soft rubber component at the cup that makes a tight seal on the curved surface of the toilet bowl. It’s advisable to have both plungers available in case of sudden clogging.

Plumber’s tape

Often referred to as Teflon tape, Plumber’s tape is essential for preventing leaks at threaded plumbing connections. Made of Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), a substance typically used in coating non-stick cookware, it’s a thin, white tape that can be wrapped around threads on pipes or fittings to keep parts together. It can also be used as a sealant to stop leaks or as a lubricant for threading.

Adjustable pipe wrench

Regarded as one of the most basic plumbing tools, an adjustable pipe wrench is ideal for compression fittings, supply lines, and other plumbing parts that have hexagonal-shaped nuts. It is used to secure pipes by digging its serrated set of teeth into the pipe with increasing pressure as the wrench is turned. Superior adjustable wrenches have a firm jaw that doesn’t slip. It’s advisable to have both six-inch and ten-inch wrenches inside your toolbox.

Tongue-and-groove pliers are slip-joint pliers with serrated jaws set about 45 to 60 degrees from the handles. They are similar to adjustable pliers with the exception of extended adjustment sections that allow for gripping pipes and other parts of different sizes. Their long handles provide excellent leverage for twisting and squeezing, and they are useful for gripping heavier steel pipes or tightening large plastic nuts on sink drains.

Faucet packing, rubber washers, and O-rings

These tools are beneficial in fixing leaky valves in sinks, radiators, and other older equipment. Coated in graphite or wax, they consist of a string used to wrap around valve stems, as well as packing nuts to create watertight seals. Rubber washers and O-rings come in different sizes and shapes that are usually sold in packs.

Tubing cutter

This is an essential tool if you are working with copper pipes. Tubing cutters are used to create clean, square cuts on copper pipes. It has thin cutting wheels that can cut metal. Use a tubing cutter by clamping and rotating it onto a pipe, then tighten the knob after every two or three rotations. Gradually, the cutting wheels will cut through the pipe. Once the pipe is cut, remove the burr on the inside of the pipe with a triangular metal piece called a de-burring tool. This can be fitted to the body of the tubing cutter. Purchase the standard- and small-sized tubing cutters.

While these tools can help you solve some common plumbing issues, nothing beats the expertise of a licensed plumber. A well-stocked toolbox and proper plumbing knowledge can assist you with short-term problem solving until the experts arrive.

Are you looking for practical ways to reduce your home maintenance cost this spring season? Conducting a thorough inspection of your plumbing system and fixing any existing issues right away is an effective approach. Your pipes and hoses might have cracks and/or clogs that developed during wintertime.

Here are money-saving plumbing tips to practice this spring:

Fix faucet leaks – A leaking faucet is one of the main reasons for water waste in the home. Faucet leaks can ruin a sink and can encourage mould and mildew growth; it is essential to repair them right away. While you’re at it, check your toilet for leaks. To prevent clogs, install drain strainers to collect dirt, hair, and soap.

Check the drains – Check drains regularly. Bathtubs, showers, and sinks are used daily and many people don’t notice how fast or slow the water drains. There are a number of ways to prevent clogs. If you don’t feel confident dealing with this problem yourself, or suspect serious plumbing issues, contact a local, licensed plumber to do the job.

Check your hot water consistency – If you’ve noticed a change in hot water flow, your water heater could be malfunctioning. If the water is too hot, chances are the unit is using a lot of energy. Get the assistance of a local plumber to see if your system is working properly.

Ensure toilets flush properly – Toilets could also be another cause of water overuse. If you think you might have a leaking toilet, add some food colour into the toilet tank. If the colouring remains in the bowl after 30 minutes, you are losing water. This requires immediate repair to avoid more serious issues later.

Keep the sump pump in top shape – Pour a few buckets of water into the sump pump. If it activates, it’s working. Its water supply shutoff valve is only activated during emergencies. Prevent it from sticking by occasionally turning it on and off.

A clogged toilet is one of the most common household issues that everyone occasionally encounters. Dealing with this problem isn’t necessarily hard work for homeowners, because they can instantly summon a licensed local plumber to handle it.

But what happens when your toilet becomes heavily clogged and is about to flood your bathroom within seconds? Are you skilled enough to manage the situation before the plumber arrives? What do you do?

You don’t have to be an expert to fix an overflowing toilet before it damages the floor and other areas. With basic knowledge on how a toilet works, coupled with a little practice, you can clear a clog like a pro before it turns into a disaster.

Here are simple tips to unclog your toilet and prevent flooding:

Prevent your toilet from filling. If you see that water might overflow out of the toilet, quickly take the lid off the tank and close the toilet flapper (flapper valve). If you’re worried a flush might turn into a flood, remove the top before you press the handle. Keep one hand close to the flapper and your other hand on the handle. Prepare to unclog the toilet once you see water rise.

Credits to: https://www.todayshomeowner.com

Turn off the water. Many toilets have a water shutoff valve behind or near the bottom of the unit. You can quickly turn the handle (like that of an outdoor hose/spigot) and turn off the localized supply without denying the rest of your house its water.

Use the correct plunger. After stopping the possibility of bathroom flooding, get a plunger. Make sure to have a tight seal between the plunger and the toilet bowl drainage area to plunge effectively. Funnel-cup plungers are ideal, since their flange fits into the drain opening, allowing for a much better seal.

Credits to: https://www.rotorooter.com

Warm up your plunger. Before dipping your plunger into the toilet, run it under or soak it in hot tap water. Hard plungers don’t work as well as soft and supple ones. Warming your plunger will soften the rubber so it can get a a good seal on the toilet bowl.

Plunge properly. Apply some force when pushing the plunger downwards and pulling it back. Do this a few times, then flush the toilet. You will know you’ve successfully unclogged the toilet if the water clears after flushing. If you’ve left the water on and the toilet begins to overflow again, close the flapper. Keep plunging and flushing until the clog is gone.

Use hot water and detergent. Hot water and gentle detergent can help break up a clog and make plunging much easier. Add a generous amount of detergent (or liquid dish soap) into the bowl. The density and thickness of the soap should seep into the clog and lubricate it. Let it sit for about 20 to 30 minutes. Then pour a few cups of hot water into the toilet (avoid overflowing the toilet bowl). The heat from the hot water helps dissipate a clog.

Hopefully, these tips will help you prevent damage to your bathroom (and floors below). If all else fails, turn off the water supply to the house can contact your trusted local plumber.
